OHIO STATE BAR FOUNDATION FELLOWS PROGRAM
The Ohio State Bar Foundation’s Fellows Program is a model for developing initiatives to assist community members with unmet legal needs. Some of the OSBF Fellows’ recent notable projects include:
- Stronger Together: Schools and LGBTQ Students – A statewide Unity Summit was developed focusing on LGBTQ+ issues around education, law and policy.
- Quick Hit Pandemic-Related Videos – YouTube videos were produced about pandemic-related legal issues.
- On the Margin: Foster Youth at Risk for Human Trafficking – A presentation and video were created, highlighting the number of Ohio kids in foster care who fall victim to human trafficking.
Each year’s Fellows class is asked to determine an area of emphasis, plan and organize the service project through monthly class meetings, and encourage all Fellows, old and new, to participate. The Fellows class shapes the curriculum and decides the delivery method, target audience, speaker and location. OSBF staff assists with logistics, such as venue, catering, audio visual, and securing contracts with speakers.
OSBF launched its inaugural Fellows Class projects in 1998. These community service initiatives have advanced the mission of the Foundation in both direct and indirect ways, as yearly Fellows classes create class projects consistent with the OSBF mission to benefit Ohioans throughout the state. Beginning in 2012, OSBF decided to take advantage of the many programs that already existed and allow new Fellows to update them and take them to the public. From 2012 to 2018, Fellows classes made presentations at schools, assisted with the work of OSBF grantees, and engaged in a variety of service projects consistent with the OSBF mission. Eventually, OSBF instituted an annual Fellows Week of Service (FWS) where all Fellows around the state can give back to their communities in furtherance of the OSBF mission.
“Over the years, we have been blessed with caring, innovative Fellows who work to identify a need and find a way to address that need,” said Velda Hofacker, NCBF board member and former OSBF president. “The Fellows have reached out to experts in their topic areas to make sure that they know how best to best find a way to educate the public and/or improve our justice system. It is a wonderful experience for our Fellows and gives them a real connection to the Ohio State Bar Foundation mission. More importantly, the work of our Fellows improves the lives of countless Ohioans!”
