This month, we celebrate The Mississippi Bar Foundation (MBF), a pillar of legal excellence and philanthropy in Mississippi since its establishment in 1963. Key Programs and Initiatives

MBF’s work encompasses access to justice and law related education, with a focus on addressing critical needs within Mississippi’s legal sphere. Here are some of their flagship programs:

• Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTA) Program
  Since 1984, MBF has administered the IOLTA program, which pools interest from lawyers’ trust accounts to fund legal aid, law-related education, and justice improvement initiatives. Mandatory since 2007, the program has awarded over $15 million in grants to support legal services for the poor, public education programs, and judicial enhancements, significantly expanding access to justice for Mississippians.
• Lawyers Emergency Assistance Fund (LEAF)
  Created in 1990, the LEAF Fund offers financial support to lawyers or their families facing catastrophic illness or injury. Funded by direct contributions from Bar members, this program reflects MBF’s commitment to supporting its legal community during times of need, ensuring colleagues are not left without resources in crises.
• Fellows Program
  The prestigious MBF Fellows Program honors up to 10% of Mississippi’s lawyers for their professionalism, competence, and service to the public and profession. Selection as a Fellow is a peer-recognized distinction, and Fellows’ contributions sustain MBF’s mission to improve justice and legal education across the state, by funding scholarships at both of Mississippi’s law schools.

For over six decades, The Mississippi Bar Foundation has been a catalyst for positive change in Mississippi’s legal landscape. The dedication of The Mississippi Bar Center in 1987 stands as a testament to MBF’s commitment to the profession. This facility serves as a hub for Bar members, hosting depositions, mediations, and conferences, while housing the staff that serves both the Foundation and the Bar.

MBF maximizes its resources to fund grants, scholarships, and programs that touch countless lives. The IOLTA program alone has transformed access to legal services, supporting organizations that provide free legal aid to low-income residents. Annual events, such as the MBF Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the Bar Convention, bring together legal leaders to honor outstanding contributions and plan for future impact.
